Your no-shampoo guide to great Coachella hair

by Cosmopolitan / Tuesday, 10 April 2018

Three hairstyles, three days, zero hair washing required.

You guys, Coachella is coming!

With the two-weekend event kicking off on Friday, it’s time to get packing and start prepping your looks. But between the stage hopping, celebrity spotting and night-after-night partying, who has energy to go through the whole hair washing situation? (Answer: not us!) So we challenged hairstylist and Co-Creative Director for ELEVEN Australia, Joey Scandizzo, to create the ultimate no-wash Coachella game plan.

N.B. Even if you’re not planning on dancing ’til dawn in the desert at this year’s festival, keep his tips in the beauty bank for your next holiday/weekend away/any other time you CBF washing your hair.

Prep: Clean Slate

“The day before, shampoo thoroughly to cleanse the scalp and create a base for the back-to-back styling ahead. I recommend using a volumising shampoo and conditioner for extra lift and hold,” Joey says. “Protect your hair from the sun and dust of the Palm Springs deserts with a nourishing leave-in treatment that protects with UVA and UVB filters.”

TRY: ELEVEN Australia I want Body Volume Shampoo, $23.95 and I want Body Volume Conditioner, $24.95 at Adore Beauty. Plus, Aveda Suncare Hair Veil, $49.95 at Mecca.

Day One: Go Natural

“This is the day to work with your natural texture rather than loading it up with products that will only weigh your hair down. Work some sea salt or texturizing spray through the mid-lengths to ends to create grit and lived-in texture,” says Joey.

Tip: Camping without power? Set a reminder on your phone to prep for your Day 2 hair look before you go to bed. “Spritz some sea salt spray through mid-length and ends and then braid, or twist your hair into two buns on the top of your head. You’ll wake up with effortless waves, no outlet necessary.”

TRY: Bumble and Bumble Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry, $45 at Mecca or Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, $63 at Adore Beauty.

Day Two: Pick a Style

“Reach for products that remove excess oil while also building pliable texture and movement,” says Joey. Work a small amount through the waves you created the night before and then either leave it down and loose or throw it up in a hun (half-up bun), hun.

You’ve made it, congratulations! Stay on track and finish your hairstyles strong. “Hit refresh with dry shampoo to soak up any excess oils one last time and then I’d use the day-three grittiness to your advantage with some braids or by accessorising with a scarf,” says Joey.

TRY: Cedel Dry Shampoo, $3.99 at Priceline or ELEVEN Give Me Clean Hair Dry Shampoo, $24.95 at Adore Beauty.
