We can’t look away.

While crazy hair colour trends are nothing new (see: ‘mulled wine hair‘), they never cease to get more nuts as the years go on.

We’ve seen a ton of pastel pink dye jobs, and just as many heads of bleached blonde hair. There’s even been spike in warm-toned locks. But nothing could have prepared us for some of the absolutely batsh*t crazy dye trends we’ve seen pop up this year.

Pixelated Hair

This, erm, unique technique was born out of Madrid-based hair group X-presion Creativos and is the perfect dye technique for those who have a nostalgic longing for vintage video games. Who doesn’t want to channel a little ‘Alien Pixel’?

While this geometric dye job isn’t for everyone, we have to admit it is pretty cool. The colour is strategically applied to the hair to achieve your desired pattern, and the design will actually shift as you run a comb through it. Fascination aside, we don’t think we’ll be rushing to our colourists requesting pixelated hair.

Tie-Dye Hair

Minnesota-based colourist, Kelsey Pebler, is campioning this boho approach to hair colour in hopes it will become THE new go-to dyeing technique for summer.

Working with both pastel, and bold and bright colours, Kelsey begins prepping the hair by taking strips of white tape and sectioning the hair with it. She then takes LimeCrime’s Unicorn Hair dye and applies a different shade to each segment, separating each layer of hair with sheets so each of the colours don’t bleed onto each other. It’s not exactly the most subtle of dye jobs, but we’re slowly warming to it…

Hot Cheeto Hair

If your two greatest loves in life are spicy snacks and a bold hair colour, then look no further. LA-based hairstylist, Helena Palacios, drew inspiration from her love of Hot Cheetos to create this fiery hair colour, using a mix of red, orange and yellow dyes melted together to create one helluva hot ombre. Even Rita Ora has hopped on the bright red hair train.

Pride Month Hair

While rainbow-tinted locks work well year ’round, they couldn’t be more suited to the month of June A.K.A Pride Month. After her client requested a hair-specific tribute to the special month, Brooklyn-based colourist, Hannah Edelman, decided to recreate the iconic rainbow flag on her strands.

After lightening her base but leaving her natural dark root, Hannah painted the flag’s bright, primary colours directly onto her client’s hair. She was also able to create a couple of other gorgeous colours by seamlessly blending the primary-coloured dyes together.

Drip Dye Hair

Colourist Taylor Rae developed her drip dye technique earlier this year. But while the finished product is truly mesmerising, watching her work seriously stresses us out.

After first diluting the dye for the ultimate drip effect, Taylor then sectioned off her client’s hair into a top and bottom half, with cling film in between to separate the two segments. She then applied a selection of complementary colours to the hair to avoid a muddy finish. To ensure the colours blend seamlessly, Taylor finished by running a wide-tooth comb through her client’s hair.

Rainbow Bangs

This super niche dye job is equal parts bizarre and magical. In an effort to change up her hair sans excess damage, colourist Caitlin Ford dreamed up her tecnicolour bangs design, following the C-shape of her full fringe as a guide for her rainbow gradient. But a little PSA: this technique doesn’t really work on non-bleached hair.
