Hair saviours: 5 DIY masks for dry, sun damaged hair
When it comes to taking care of our skin, sun damage is generally at the top of our concerns, but what about our hair? There’s nothing more frustrating than having brittle, dry, damaged hair after lying in the summer sun. Not to mention, the health of our hair says a lot about the health of our body.
So, don’t let the heat damage your locks, here are 5 natural remedies (we love a good DIY!) that will keep your hair looking healthy and glowing all season long.
Aloe Vera Hair Mask
This is a great mask for dry and damaged hair, which will not only protect your locks from the harsh elements, but provide incredible nourishment too.
Mix 5 tablespoons of aloe vera juice from the plant or use aloe oil and 3 tablespoons of coconut oil in a bowl. Then, apply it to your hair and leave on for 10 minutes before washing off as normal.
Avocado Hair Mask
Avocado and honey will help rejuvenate the keratin protein bonds that get attacked by the sun’s UV Rays, while the lemon juice and olive oil will make your hair super silky and easy to run your fingers through – bliss!
Mix an avocado, 2 tablespoons of honey, 3 tablespoons of olive oil and a few drops of lemon juice to a bowl and blend. Leave this in your hair for 20 minutes and rinse, shampoo and condition as normal.
Banana Hair Mask
Bananas are great for repairing damaged hair due to the potassium they contain. They are super moisturising and packed with a range of vitamins that make for a super smoothing and de-tangling hair mask.
Blend 1 banana and 1 teaspoon of honey into a bowl. Ensure it is mixed well enough that it’s as smooth as a peanut butter paste with no lumpy bits.
Apply it to your hair and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Wash it out thoroughly and walk away looking like a silky hair model and smelling like a tropical smoothie.
Strawberries and Mayo Hair Mask
This is a great conditioning treatment for frizzy hair. The strawberries provide great hydration and the mayo will provide needed proteins to your hair which is be super beneficial for sun-damaged hair.
Mix a handful of crushed strawberries and a tablespoon of mayonnaise to make a smooth paste – leave it on for 15-30 minutes and wash out – be sure to rinse this out very well.
Argan/Jojoba Oil Treatment
Put a few drops of Argan or Jojoba oil into your hair and massage it. The benefits of these oils will help lubricate and maintain the elasticity of your hair. These oils will make your hair feel softer and look silkier.
And the easiest tip of all? Always remember to rinse your hair with cool water. Cool water helps to seal in moisture from your wash and close the cuticle – leaving your hair looking nourished and glossy.
