Beyonce’s go-to makeup artist, Sir John.
The makeup artist — who also counts VS model Joan Smalls as a faithful client — never fails to create one heck of a healthy, flawless glow that manages to remain intact whether his client is on-stage or on the red carpet.
While we’re simply swiping our favourite illuminating powders over the highpoints of our face, Sir John prefers that you ‘sandwiched’ your face makeup to achieve glowy skin and flawless coverage. Confused? Let us explain.
“First I apply a rich, water-based moisturizer to the skin,” Sir John told Cosmopolitan US.
Instead of waiting for moisturiser to sink into the skin, Sir John instead applies foundation on the face before it absorbs. “While that’s still wet, I’ll use a BeautyBlender to apply foundation all over, because, as the moisturiser dries, it’s adhering to the skin in a really soft, organic way.”
“After I’ve applied all the face makeup — powder, bronzer, blush, everything — I mix rose gold highlighting drops (try Marc Jacobs Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter, $63 at Sephora) with moisturizer and apply it everywhere except the T-zone,” said Sir John.
FYI if you’re unsure about why you should be avoiding the t-zone when highlighting, we an equally amazing makeup artist to explain. “You need to make sure the skin is nice and matte in the t-zone,” says Rihanna’s makeup artist, Hector Espinal.
“The reason why is because it’s the only area that really gets shiny. The forehead, underneath the eyes, upper lip and chin gets very oily, and that’s unwanted highlight,” says Hector.
But back to the Bey-approved beauty hacks. Sir John loved to use a little eye cream to prime an unexpected place. “I like to apply an anti-wrinkle eye cream to prep the lips,” he told Cosmo US.
“It creates a smooth canvas, hydrates, and offsets the damage done by matte formulas, which can age your lips. Also, eye creams won’t change the texture or look of whatever lip product you’re wearing.”
He also recommends warming concealer on the back of your hands before you tap it on the eyes to thin out the consistency of the product “so it looks more lived-in, more like a second skin.”
