Hear me out: Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen was one of the most iconic teen movies of the early aughts. The movie follows Lola, played by Lindsay Lohan, as she moves to the suburbs away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. Being a city girl, Lindsay’s character brought in a whole new attitude when it came to her style, ranging from a classic “I Heart NY” t-shirt paired with a fishnet long-sleeved shirt on top – because, duh! – to a mod-inspired minidress. Her character goes on to wear a variety of nostalgic looks like cargo pants, newsboy caps, and feathered coats that make us wish it was 2004 again.

Another thing we love? There were plenty of memorable songs, some sung by LiLo herself, such as “Drama Queen (That Girl),” which is currently being played on loop on TikTok. (I actually bought the CD back in the day and did’t regret it one bit.) It was pretty cool to see a young Megan Fox play the villain with style to boot. We’re talking matching leather jackets with her posse, along with Tiffany & Co. heart chainlink necklaces. Common Skin-Care Mistake #1: Popping Pimples

We’ve all done it, but dermatologists always recommend you don’t take matters into your own hands and pop a zit.

“This is especially harmful if you are attempting to pop cysts (comedones) that are below the skin and cannot ‘come to a head’ through manual squeezing,” Lucy Chen, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Riverchase Dermatology in Miami, told POPSUGAR. Not only is squeezing at an unpoppable pimple painful but you can cause even more unnecessary damage to your skin.

“Squeezing can push bacteria and pus deeper into the skin, which can result in trauma to the skin such as piercing the skin (if someone is using an at-home lancer), redness, or swelling,” she said. “Squeezing also can lead to scabs, which can leave you with acne pockmarks or scars.”

Instead, cystic pimples that are deep under the skin need to be treated by a dermatologist. They can properly lance the zit or inject it with a cortisone shot to help bring down the inflammation.

Common Skin-Care Mistake #2: Changing Routines Frequently

As fun as it can be to try new skin-care products, doing so too frequently can leave you with more woes than you started with.

“I know that it can be frustrating to have breakouts and blemishes, but the tendency is to research new products and try too many at one time or switch them out before the active ingredients have a chance to make an impact on the skin,” said Corey L. Hartman, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, AL. “Most ingredients will take at least four to six weeks of consistent use before making changes that are noticeable, so hang in there and give them a chance to work.”

If after six weeks of using a product you still don’t notice a difference, then you should see your dermatologist to find a better solution.

Common Skin-Care Mistake #3: Forgetting to Apply Sunscreen Everywhere

You’ve probably heard it a million times before, but dermatologists can’t stress the importance of wearing sunscreen daily enough. Rain or shine, year-round, whether you’re staying indoors or not, you should be wearing at least SPF 30 – even in places you might not think.

“On top of that, [people] forget to apply SPF on their lips,” said Marnie B. Nussbaum, MD, FAAD, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and Eos brand ambassador. “Lips are more susceptible to sun damage because they lack melanocytes, so there is no melanin. The skin is also much thinner than the skin on your face.”

Many people don’t think about their lips aging or being susceptible to skin cancer, but it’s a risk you take when you don’t apply sunscreen to them.

Common Skin-Care Mistake #4: Showering in Hot Water

Even your daily shower can be causing more harm than good to your skin if you’re doing it wrong. It comes down to the temperature of the water you’re using.

“While a hot shower may be your favorite way to start or end your day, it can be damaging to your skin,” said board-certified dermatologist and Olay brand ambassador Sheila Farhang, MD. “Hot water actually strips away the skin’s natural oils and disrupts surface lipids and proteins, causing the skin to become easily inflamed.”

Instead, she recommended you “decrease shower length, and use tepid water temperature instead of hot.”

Common Skin-Care Mistake #5: Skipping Skin Checks

Right up there with wearing sunscreen daily is getting regular skin checks for skin cancer. “It is so important that people start getting annual skin cancer screenings in their 20s to help catch and detect skin cancer,” board-certified dermatologist Orit Markowitz, MD, said. “Early detection is crucial to treating skin cancer before it becomes melanoma.”

If you’re prone to moles or have a history of skin cancer, Dr. Markowitz actually recommended going biannual and ensuring your doctor uses a dermatoscope. “This is a hand-held microscope that has double the magnification and uses polarized lighting that allows us to look at your skin with more clarity,” she said. “Currently, only 50 percent of dermatologists use this, and without utilizing this tool, you really are not getting a proper skin screening.”

Common Skin-Care Mistake #6: Overdoing It With Spot Treatments

Even too much of a good thing can be bad, and that rule applies to acne spot treatments, too. This is especially true with over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.

“The tendency is to apply them liberally, which will only make the surrounding skin red, dry, and irritated,” said Shari Marchbein, MD, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NYU School of Medicine. “Instead, if you are going to spot treat, apply only a very thin layer one or two times per day maximum.”

If nothing seems to be working or your acne is leaving you with scars or hyperpigmentation, that’s when it’s time to seek care from your doctor.

Common Skin-Care Mistake #7: Thinking “Squeaky” Clean Is Good

You need to cleanse your skin regularly to keep it free of dirt, sweat, makeup, and other grim, but you don’t ever want your skin to feel tight after you wash it.

“Most people think that to be really clean, your skin should be ‘squeaky,’ when, in fact, that squeaky clean feeling is not what you want for your skin,” said Dr. Farhang. “If your skin sounds squeaky or feels tight, that’s your skin’s way of telling you it’s been stripped of its natural moisture.”

If your cleanser leaves you with that “squeaky” feeling, it’s a sign that you need a more hydrating option.

Common Skin-Care Mistake #8: Falling For Social Media Fads

TikTok is loaded with skin-care knowledge, but it’s important to remember that it’s no substitution for a doctor’s personalized expertise.

“These days, I see people assuming that what works for a friend, coworker, or stranger on TikTok will work for them,” said Dr. Hartman. “Everyone has unique skin-care needs, issues, and goals. Just because someone that you know used a product and had phenomenal results doesn’t mean that the product is well-suited for you.”

His advice: take everything you see on social media with a grain of salt, and when in doubt, ask a doctor. “Next time you’re tempted to tell the girl on Twitter with the perfect skin to ‘drop the skin-care routine,’ ask yourself if you know anything about the road that it took to get her there.”

Common Skin-Care Mistake #9: Forgetting Your Neck

For many people, their skin-care routine ends at the jaw and their body-care routine begins at the chest, leaving the neck completely forgotten. “The neck is a thinner, more delicate skin than that of the face, and therefore, requires special care and attention from the skin-care products that you use,” said Dr. Marchbein. “It also has fewer oil glands and is more prone to showing signs of aging such as sagging, sun spots, and fine lines.”

The same products you use on your face can be used on your neck, as long as they’re not too irritating.

Common Skin-Care Mistake #10: Serum Cocktailing

Serum cocktailing – or “stacking individual ingredients that are purchased separately and believing that is the equivalent of one product that contains multiple of them together” – as board-certified dermatologist Kavita Mariwalla called it is a risky move. That’s why dermatologists recommend saving your mixology skills for the kitchen.

Here’s why: “Ingredients are only one part of the formulation,” said Dr. Mariwalla. “You have to think about stability, percentages, and how it is manufactured. Consider simplifying your routine and using one or two products that have actives combined – often those formulations are actually more clinically active than the ingredients alone.”

Common Skin-Care Mistake #11: Using the Same Razor For Too Long

Skin-care mistakes aren’t limited to just your face. In fact, one of the biggest mistakes Dr. Marchbein encounters has to do with not changing your razor blade often enough.

“Ingrown hairs, folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles), and irritation of the skin can happen as razor blades become dull,” she said. “For best results when shaving, I recommend changing your razor blade every two to three shaves.”

Common Skin-Care Mistake #12: Overexfoliating

People often don’t exfoliate at all or they do it too much but there is a sweet spot that you should aim for.

“Overexfoliation is one of the most common reasons for acne in my adult patients,” said Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, FAAD, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and founder of Hudson Dermatology & Laser Surgery. “Many patients use exfoliating cleansers, physical brushes, and then creams with light acids multiple times a day. It’s way too much.”

You should only exfoliate one to two times a week unless you have very oily skin and are advised to do more by a doctor. “I am more about barrier repair and providing calming ingredients rather than overdoing it on the other side of the spectrum,” said Dr. Bhanusali.

Common Skin-Care Mistake #13: Not Moisturizing

Moisturizing is imperative for a healthy skin barrier, which is why you shouldn’t skip out on using it daily. Many people with oily or acne-prone skin think they can use this product less, but that’s not the case.

“Skin hydration and moisturizing properly are extremely important,” said Dr. Marchbein. “The best moisturizers have a combination of emollients and humectants. Look specifically for ceramides, glycerin, dimethicone, petrolatum, and hyaluronic acid, among others in the list of ingredients.”

Common Skin-Care Mistake #14: Skipping Out on Cleansing at Night

If you go to bed without washing your face, especially if you have makeup on, you’re practically asking for bacteria buildup. “More relevant to now, I have my patients cleanse after being outside with their masks on for long periods of time,” said Dr. Bhanusali. “It’s the easiest way to prevent maskne and breakouts.”

Never has a haircut trend been more aptly named than “the shift.” This short hairstyle is categorised by choppy layers of varying lengths on the top of the head. “The ‘shift’ [has] versatile styling options – from something edgy and raw to extremely polished and sophisticated,” Adam Federico, R+Co’s director of content, previously told POPSUGAR. “The haircut can be finished to suit the individual’s personality and meet them for who they are within that day.”

We’re just going to get straight to it: the mullet is making a comeback. Luckily, the latest rendition of the faithfully divisive “business in the front, party in the back” haircut is much cooler and way more low-key this time around – and works with any texture or hair type. “You can embrace your natural waves and curls, wear it straight, or switch it up by adding extra bends and dimension with hot tools,” LA-based celebrity hairstylist Laurie Heaps said.

Mondo added: “Anyone can pull off a mullet because of how versatile they are; however, I do feel they work best on heart and oval facial shapes.”

Ready for a nostalgia hit? The bubble ponytail is back, years after we first rocked the look in primary school. If you’re unfamiliar with the style, it involves putting your hair into a ponytail, then popping hair elastics down the length of said ponytail in order to create little bubbles of hair.

While the style isn’t groundbreaking by any means, it has been plunged back into the beauty zeitgeist, with a number of people rocking the look on Instagram — the hashtag #bubble ponytail currently has over 20,000 posts on the social platform. As Stylist pointed out, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Olivia Lux also recently styled their hair in this way, making a firm case for the throwback hairstyle.

Hairstylist Justine Marjan also recently shared a bubble ponytail tutorial to her 400,000 Instagram followers. Marjan’s secret for making the bubbles pop in the ponytail is by backcombing the hair slightly before adding the next elastic. Genius!

As far as hair trends go, we’re living for this one. Sure, dyeing your hair pink, cutting a mullet or dabbling in vacation highlights is fun, but there’s nothing quite like a trend that pulls at the nostalgic parts of our hearts and the bubble ponytail does this perfectly.

All our favorite celebs and influencers have jumped on the multiple ear piercings bandwagon, and it’s high time that you did, too. If you’re tired of your usual ear candies, read on for the prettiest combinations that will make everyone do a double-take. Keep on scrolling to find your next inspo:

1. Flat + Triple lobe

If you don’t want your ear to look too ~crowded~ but you still want multiple ear candies, go for a flat piercing + triple lobe. This combo looks clean AF.

2. Single lobe + Daith + Helix

If you like your piercings spaced out from each other, try a single lobe + daith + helix combination. 

3. Single lobe + Industrial

An industrial piercing is sure to do all the talking, so make sure to pair it up with something low-key such as a single lobe one.

4. Conch + Double helix + Single lobe

If you’re obsessed with hoops, this combo is perf for you.

5. Triple lobe + Conch

Keep everything on the lower part of your ear by getting a triple lobe + conch piercing combination.

6. Triple lobe

If you want to put a twist on the usual triple lobe piercing, instead of getting them vertically, ask your piercer if you can get it shaped like a triangle. We love how Kathryn Bernardo did hers!

7. Conch + Helix + Flat

If you want to keep the lower part of your ear bare, situate all your piercings on top, like this conch + helix + flat combo.

1. Stacks

If you’re looking for a piercing that isn’t that painful and is easy to heal, the stacking trend is your best option. It’s by far the most popular piercing you can get on your lobes in 2020. Every piercer I interviewed brought up the placement.

Most of the time, “a tiny stud is added on top of a hole that already exists,” explains Adrian Castillo, a piercer at 108 Studios, which has locations in New York City and Los Angeles. Alternately, you can get two new piercings placed vertically on your lobe in the place of your second hole.

“The idea came from the necessity of needing to make everyone’s old mall piercings as symmetrical as possible or make it look like they were pierced low on purpose,” he adds. “It’s a fun way to breathe new life into a lobe.”

You can also do the same linear alignment on other parts of your ear too, points out Lisa Bubbers, the cofounder and CMO of Studs, a new piercing studio in New York City. Kaia Gerber recently stopped by to get what Bubbers calls “Snakebites” on the midway point of her helix.

2. Orbital

If you’re not ready for the unconventional-yet-soon-to-be-conventional stacked placement of earrings, Cassie Lopez has an alternative. You can connect your first hole with your second (or second and third) with a seamless hoop to create an orbital piercing.

“I’ve been getting lots of requests for orbitals lately,” says Cassi Lopez-March, owner and piercer at So Gold Studios in New York City. “I think the fact that it’s a simple ring makes it stylish and understated. Also, connecting two holes makes it a little more fun.”

3. Floating Cartilage

Over at New York City’s Stone and Strand, this placement is called the “floating cartilage,” and it’s the most popular non-lobe piercing. “Instead of piercing the edge of the ear for a hoop, these piercings lay on the flat of the ear and are beautiful, delicate, statement piercings for those who want to amplify a look without overpowering any other aesthetic options,” Janeese Brooks, the shop’s head piercer, explains.

4. Tragus

Tragus is the official name for “the little flap of cartilage on the side of your face that covers your ear canal,” Castillo says. It’s a subtle-yet-adventurous piercing placement that’s continuously popular. I can personally vouch for this one as it’s the first non-lobe piercing I ever got, and it’s one of my favorites. Plus, it’s my ear piercing people ask me most about.

Sam Hayler, the senior piercer at London’s Astrid & Miyu, notes the popularity of tragus piercings stems from their minimalistic appeal. “It’s something a bit different from just getting your regular lobes pierced and we can pierce them with a range of dainty jewelry,” she says. I, for example, have a small stud in mine.

5. Nipples

“2020 will be the year of nipple piercings,” Castillo declares.

“We’re only a few weeks in and they’re the most requested,” he continues. “Maybe it has to do with everything happening in the world, and people are just saying to themselves, ‘Screw it. 6. Conch

The inner part of your ear is called your conch, in case you didn’t know. Hayler has seen an increase in customers who are asking for it to be pierced. (She even did mine last time Astrid & Miyu had a pop-up in New York City.) Usually, you start off with a stud. Then, you can change it out to a hoop after six months, Lopez-March says.

Instagram and the ear-cuff jewelry trend has a lot to do with the rise of the conch piercing. “The conch is definitely becoming more popular due to social media as the piercing is getting a lot more coverage,” Hayler says. “People who want a more permanent ear cuff are also leading the way.”

7. Customization

You don’t necessarily need to know exactly what you want to get pierced after making an appointment at your favorite studio. One of the biggest trends is trust, if you ask Castillo and Brooks. Allow your piercer to pick what works best for your ear shape for your own custom ear party.

“Right now, it seems like people come in with a vague idea of what they want, but it almost always ends up changing by the time they sit down with me,” Castillo points out.

He goes on to mention that he’s gotten a reputation for being good at letting people know what will work for them. I can attest to that as I’ve accompanied my friend Brooke a couple of times, and she tells Castillo to do whatever he wants. He usually marks a couple of spots, and she picks her favorite. “It’s really humbling to have free reign on people’s ears,” he adds.

No matter which of these piercing trends you decide to try out, please get them done by a professional to eliminate as many risks as possible. Keep in mind that you should go to a studio that uses pre-sterilized tools that are opened in front of you, recommends TJ Cantwell, the owner of New York City–based Studio 28 Tattoos and Body Piercing. The piercing jewelry should be made out of surgical-grade titanium or gold, which are the least likely to cause infection.

After your appointment, your piercer will tell you the best aftercare routine for your piercing, but typically, you’ll need to cleanse with a saline spray as it heals. if you’re having any issues during the process, be sure to visit your dermatologist.

Brown lipstick and butterfly clips aren’t the only ’90s beauty trends making a comeback. So are piercings — more specifically, eyebrow piercings. In the latest episode of Macro Beauty, Lauren Begay, a cinematographer in Los Angeles, visits the Aesthetic Ambition Piercing and Tattoo studio to try the look for herself. “I want to get my eyebrow pierced because I like the look of it, and I think it’s badass,” she says. “I am a cinematographer, and I feel like an eyebrow piece will tie the whole look together.”

Luci Doll, a professional piercer at Aesthetic Ambition, guides Begay through the process, explaining that it’s a bit more involved than a typical piercing. “I love eyebrow piercings,” she says. “They’re super fun and easy for me at this point.” Though Doll considers the procedure a walk in the park now, she does warn that it requires special skill and precision. “Eyebrow piercings are interesting. They’re one of the only piercings that require a two-push method,” she explains. “It’s a little bit more of a finesse.”

To create the most comfortable experience for Begay, Doll talked her through placement options before picking up a 16-gauge needle to pierce her arch. After carefully threading an onyx-ball earring through Begay’s brows, her piercing was complete and she did what any of us would do: She called her mom. “You look different — in a good way,” her mom said to her, nodding in approval.
