Forget what your mom told you — it’s actually okay to sleep with wet hair

by LOURDES AVILA URIBE / Thursday, 04 January 2018

There are many reasons why air drying your hair is good — it keeps your hair healthy and strong and it allows your natural texture to shine through, among other things. With that said, sometimes your hair can take longer to dry than anticipated, leaving you with no other option than to go to sleep with wet hair.

If you’re one of the lucky few who can go to bed with wet hair and wake up looking like a French ingénue, then more power to you! The rest of us often have to contend with weird bends, frizziness, and all-around messiness. However, PopSugar spoke to KMS Global Stylist, Lori Panarello, who reported that there are ways to coax your hair into looking fabulous even when you fall asleep with it wet.

First things first, it’s important to note that there’s a difference between going to bed with hair that is soaking wet and damp hair. If you have soaking wet hair, not only is it bad for you, but it might not even dry by the time you wake up, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Hairstylist Lori Panarello shared a few tips with PopSugar on how to get those coveted natural waves when sleeping with wet hair.

She mentions that braids are a surefire way to get a great wave going in your hair. You can go with a single braid for very loose waves, or add more braids for a tighter, more dramatic wave.

Panarello also tells PopSugar that wrapping hair tightly in a scarf or headband will help fight frizz and it will leave your hair looking and feeling more natural than if you had blow-dried it. You can also go old-school and wrap your hair in rag rolls for a beachy hair look.

Sometimes we love going all out and doing our hair to perfection, but it’s a lot of work. It’s nice to know that there are techniques for getting healthy hair that is a bit less strenuous.
