9 Clown Makeup Ideas for Halloween That Aren’t Pennywise

by Devon Abelman / Tuesday, 17 October 2017

Thanks to the box office success of It, clown makeup is no longer confined to children’s birthday parties. Makeup inspired by the movie’s main character has officially taken over Instagram feeds and Pennywise clown suits have become the most sought-after costume for 2017. Come October 31, you’re bound to see more clowns than you’re comfortable with.

Beyond Pennywise’s signature look, makeup artists on Instagram have come up with several different ways to do clown makeup for Halloween. Many have maintained the creepy factor, but others have created cutesy versions that won’t scare the kids that live next door. We rounded up some of our favorite looks, so you can still be a clown this year without looking like everyone else at your next Halloween party.

Glitter Glam

Classic clown makeup is not immune from the Instagram makeup treatment. Aaliyah Jay made candy apple red lipstick and lots of glitter look more sinister than ever.

Pierrot

Face painter Laura Kalmakoff and makeup artist Alex Rivera paid homage to old-school pantomimes. I’m living for the airbrush-like blush.

Bloody

On the scarier side of the spectrum, you have clown makeup that requires lots of fake blood.
